Link & Image o’ the Week for 31/01/2010
Jan0
This week’s Link o’ the Week is a great how-to blog from Rad Sechrist, a stunning cartoonist who I first came across in one of the Flight anthologies, and who now works as a storyboard artist at DreamWorks Animation. He’s got some fantastic drawing tips on his blog. Highly recommended if you want to push your cartooning a little further. Rad also has a personal blog which he updates often.
This week’s Image o’ the Week is a poster I designed for Canadian Improv Comedy group PROJECTproject (I also designed the logo that appears on their website).
Look forward to some new work I have to show off this week!

Hey guys!
This week’s Image o’ the Week is from the new Silhouettes gallery on Shiggy.com.au. I really dig doing these silhouette illustrations. If I could ever see my self exhibiting a bunch of pictures in a gallery or something, it would probably be a series of silhouettes.
And the Link o’ the Week goes to SixCrayons, a design and illustration resource site / burgeoning online community with heaps of great tutorials, tips and links posted regularly (which is a lot more than I can say for this blog.) Illustrator/designer over at SixCrayons Harry Ford recently wrote a great little blog post about the slew of “best of” and “top 20″ lists that clogged our RSS readers over the new year, and design blogs that continuously blog “inspiration” posts and not nearly enough original content.
That’s it for now!

Lucy and I now have a photoblog thing at tumblr. It is called:
There will be photos like this posted there:
I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing yet. It’s just a thing.
Amazing Paintings by Amy Bennett & the Music of Martin Denny

Just discovered an amazing artist named Amy Bennett through FFFFOUND! Here is her website and here are a couple of my favourite pieces:

Also, I’ve been listening to the musical stylings of Martin Denny:

Hi reader! I’m writing to you from wintry Melbourne, Australia. I flew down from Darwin a few days ago for an extended visit to my home town.
We have a new Link o’ the Week over at Shiggy.com.au! This week’s lucky recipient is illustrator Phil McAndrew who has a smashing blog called the Marvellous Mustache Factory! Phil’s wonderful art is full of hilariously grotesque characters and charming facial hairs. He also makes comics, which you can find here. I’ve been in love with Phil’s inky linework and off-kilter sense of humour for a while now, and it’s great to see him continually producing amazing work.
Also at Shiggy.com.au is a new Image o’ the Week:
I drew this last year for my lady friend Lucy. I might make something else in this faux “cut-out” style. It was fun.
Anyway, I’m gonna go enjoy some more of these Melbourne weathers. Seeing “District 9″ tonight. I’m a big fan of Neill Blomkamp’s short films. I highly recommend Alive in Joburg, which served as inspiration for his feature debut.
Later!
Link o’ the Week & a Work in Progress

Got bored doing the things I was supposed to be doing and started doing something just for fun. Here’s the start of it:

It’s continuation may be delayed as I’m flying to Melbourne in a couple of days and I have a lot to do before then.
In website news (shiggy.com.au), I’ve added a “Link o’ the Week” feature to the home page, right under the “Image o’ the Week” feature. This week’s featured link is the blog of Kim Fleming, talented Aussie illustrator.
I first encountered Kim’s work whilst working on “Grouchy Granny” for Funtastic Publishing. The editor sent me a sample of a previous book they’d published called “Boss of the Farm”, which was illustrated by Kim. She works wonders with watercolours and if you take a look at her blog, you’ll see she’s constantly challenging herself with new techniques.
“Grouchy Granny” can be found at the National Library of Australia here, as can “Boss of the Farm” here.
