Heath McIvor - Puppeteer

After a number of concept sketches, I arrive at a concept that works best for the job, in this case, a painted portrait-style image of the client as a puppet. I keep the drawing loose and quick during this stage. All that's required is getting down the basic idea.

After I've selected the concept that I'm going to bring to final art, I refine the linework and proportions to use as a guide for the colours.

I then block in the coloured areas flatly, each area on a separate layer (so as to allow for easy changes later on).

From there, I pick a light source direction and render the colours in a painterly style.

I paint in the background and plaque on separate layers, add some final details to the portrait, including a secondary light-source to make the image "pop" more. And that's the lot!
